Vertical vs Venetian blinds

Vertical vs Venetian blinds

The right blinds can bring privacy to your home without compromising the light in your home. There are many varieties of blinds to choose from including roman, shutter, venetian, vertical and roller. While all functional and stylish in their own way, vertical and venetian blinds are some of the most common blinds in homes today.

But how do you choose between these two styles? It can help to compare the two and consider your home and what you want. To get you started, we’ve put together this handy information guide.

Vertical or Venetian?

While both types are popular, they aren’t interchangeable. One style may be better suited to your home than another.

  • Light control

As venetian blinds are horizontal slats, they can be a great way to let light in at the degree that you want. By twisting the rod, you can adjust the slats to block or let light in. If you want to let as much light in as possible, you can also raise the blinds completely. However, this can often be difficult to do properly as the slats often do not line up properly and look unappealing.

In comparison, vertical blinds work in the same manner but have vertical slats. They are also easier to completely ‘raise’ as they simply slide to the side, making for an easy way to let in as much light as possible.

They often work best too with larger windows, where venetian blinds can be too much in a large window.

  • Privacy

Both vertical and venetian provide you with additional privacy. You can adjust the slats to let light in but obscure the view in from the outside. However, depending on how they are installed, either side will have small gapes around the window frame.

  • Easy to clean

Both styles of window coverings are easy to clean but one may be better if you don’t enjoy cleaning or are time poor.

For both styles, you need to clean each slat. However, as venetian slats lie horizontally, they tend to collect more dust regularly. It can also be difficult to reach higher-up slats to clean.

Vertical blinds, on the other hand, collect less dust as there are fewer horizontal surfaces. These can offer be cleaned with quick brush from a duster or cloth in a matter of minutes.

Of course, whichever style you choose, you also need to take into consideration the material they are made from. Some materials made be more difficult to clean or require more maintenance.

  • Long-lasting

Both blinds are durable but also have some flaws. The cords of venetian blinds can easily become tangled or lose tension, making it difficult to raise them.

Vertical slats can be bent and twisted; however, newer styles have counterweights on the bottom to minimize the likelihood of this.

Again, durability is affected by the material of the blinds as well.

  • Different materials

Venetian blinds come in a range of materials including wood and aluminium. However, you are often limited when it comes to colors.

Vertical blinds also come in a range of materials but often have more colors, as they are often made from different fabrics.

Consider the existing style of your room and which type of blind may offer you the color and texture you’re after.

  • Control mechanisms

One of the key differences between vertical and venetian blinds is that vertical blinds move sideways, while Venetians move upwards and downwards. Both utilize a chain and pulley system to do this.

As described above, you can filter light in by twisting an adjusting rod that angles the slats as you would like.

However, you do need to be careful with cords and chains on your blinds if you have small children or pets. These cords and chains can be choking hazards, so you may need to consider another style of window covering altogether.
